“Worms”, The Blog
“Worms” is the newest project at animaking, a stop-motion animation
feature made for all ages, with its focus on children.
The feature is about a worm pre-teen, Junior, who has difficulties to interact well with
his peers. Like many typical urban boys of today, he is over protected and spoiled by his parents.
But Junior never gives up in his attempts to be accepted by his friends until one day he is accidentally brought
up to the surface by a shovel – that's when his incredible journey begins .
Through many exciting adventures and with lots of action, our little hero learns that values like self-respect,
trust and true friendship are the true weapons to be able to get over the obstacles of life.
Inspired by our Award winning short film also called “Worms”, which won awards at important animation festivals like Anima Mundi in Rio
and São Paulo, and the Tokyo Video Festival in Japan, the movie is a pioneer in Brazil in its use of the stop-motion technique in feature films.
Animaking is the largest stop-motion animation studio in Brazil today, and has based its operations on the island city of Florianópolis,
in the state of Santa Catarina and is just a quick shuttle flight from São Paulo.
Animaking has also invited Glaz Entretenimento here in Brazil as a partner to help produce certain aspects
of the movie, and are also in co-production with the Canadians Wizz Films and Mokko Studios who will assist in the post-production process.
And have also been joined by Globo Filmes and Fox Films with regard to the movies media and its distribution for Brazil and Latin America.

Golden Macaw is Ours!
On May 8th, we were excited to attend the International Film Festival of
Tourism - Tourfilm Brazil, held at the Town Council of Santa Catarina.
We ran in the category "Animation / 3D," winning the first place (Golden Macaw) ahead of films from Poland (Macaw Silver) and Austria (Macaw
Bronze).
The Tourfilm Brazil is the largest festival dedicated to the tourism
segment in Latin America, receiving productions worldwide.
The film produced by Animaking called "Worms Around the World" and was
commissioned by the Department of Tourism to promote the Santa Catarina
State.
We used the characters Jr. and Grandpa from the movie "Worms" to
introduce the natural beauty of Santa Catarina on the internet.

He is the Man!
Graduated from the University of New York (in Movie and TV) and living several years in Los Angeles, Pete directed, wrote and animated commercials for several major companies like Mac Donalds, Microsoft, Lottery in Spain, Heinz, American Greetings, among many others, as well as TV shows like Robot Chicken, Chowder, etc..
Pete knows all about Stop Motion; he has built puppets, scenery, besides being a lighting director.(And good lighting is essential in this art of animation.)
He is already a part of the crew who he believes are top notch professionals! What made Pete move from the Californian beaches to Floripa's? It was not because of the beaches, he said, even though they are beautiful, but the fact was the "Movie" in his words,to be different, and to be part of its uniqueness. He saw the teaser and wanted to be part of this project. And so he sent us his portfolio.
To learn more about his work, click HERE.

WORMS in the Media
Gaining in importance and fame our Worms are now in the Magazine Galileo this January. It's worth Checking Out! The article came out great and was
graphically splendid, full of movement and color.
It is also worth seeing the terrific-interview our director Arthur Nunes gave to Canson's Newsletter 17 - www.canson.com.br. - which by the way
is a very neat site,too.
Our VIP Worms have been attending a lot of TV programs and it's hard to keep track of all of them – but as a New Year's Resolution – we will tryto let you know in advance!

Look at the Time!
Everything changes in life and why not trying to change for the better?
The tireless directors of WORMS, PaoloConti and Arthur Nunes are thinking
about the possibility of opening their film with another technique of
Stop Motion: Paper Animation!
For this experiment, they invited none other than the expert Carlos Meira
- a disciple of the legendary Leo Monahan, he has been dedicated to this
delicate technique of paper sculpture for many years..
Small children and grown ups, come early to the movie theater: the film
promises to be amazing from the very beginning!

The Deputy Mayor's visit
Although increasingly international, our Worms do not forget the ground
where they come from! So it was only natural to receive a surprise-visit
from Deputy Mayor, Gean Marques Loureiro. With whom him also came José
Carlos Rauen - Secretary of Environment and Urban Development, Luiz
Americo Medeiros - Secretary of Infrastructure and Dinho - Councilman for
Florianópolis. In the picture there are also representatives of Sapiens
Park : Dr. Saulo Vieira, José Eduardo Fiates and Marcelo Guimaraes.
Besides having caught our director in his shorts, our Worms thanked their

To sir, with love
It seems that the interest about our Worms have no size. This week we received the college students from Assesc - who are studying
Broadcasting. Professor Marcius (also our master in 3D Modelling) were
amazed about the adventures of our little heroes.
And so we closed the week with two good examples of dedicated teachers who motivate their students to do their best.

THAT IS LOVE!!!!!!!!!!
Believe it or not!
Children from a Public School in Videira ( 400 km from Florianopolis) had the initiative to present a project about Animation and Stop Motion at their annual Science Fair. Surfing thru internet they found about our Teaser Worms. Besides their presentation they made their own T-shirt about the movie ( which we also want one!!!).
Everything happened because of Cleciane Tahrun, their amazing teacher who with her enthusiasm and dedication motivates us to make even a better film, as now we know, our amazing Worms are going to be seen and loved by a reaaaaaaly large audience.

A Very Important Person

Among all the guests who have been visiting the studios of Worms, including sponsors and experts from different cultural areas like communication and film-making, both from here and abroad – none had more authority to evaluate our work than this very important person who visited us last week. We are talking about "Taís Ribeiro" who represents one of the most important kinds of animation experts in the world: the children’s audience.
This 12-year-old pre-teen checked out thoroughly the set crew’s work and then evaluated the quality of the movie shot so far. Taking into consideration the talent of the actors performing, the scene action accuracy and how funny the jokes were, Taís applauded the shot sequences and congratulated Animaking for the outstanding job! However... she had called to out atention that one of the employees were taking a nap after lunch on the studios deck. Poli Graciano promised her that it had never happened before, and made it up to her by showing her how much work he had been doing as the producer coordinator of the movie.
There’s a rumor going around that Neco has been seen sighing and singing poems and smiling without a good reason. ”I told him to get real because Tais would not be interested in an eight-year-old nerd. But he did not listen to me and he has been weeping since her departure,” said Linda.
The film directors were also very pleased with Tais’ approval and are motivated to keep up with the good work.

From CG to Stop Motion

When the fine artist Gabriel Costa accessed the "WORMS" blog for the first time in the begin of 2008, he could not have imagined he would star in a post as a stop-motion animator. The newest member of our team is 26 years old and is from Cuiabá, MT. He has a degree in Fine Arts from UFBA ( Federal University of Bahia).Gabriel started to work in 3D modeling in 2006 when he was still in college. Later, he developed his animation skills when he worked as a free lancer.
In June, 2008 Gabriel was teaching classes about 3D in Florianópolis when he was invited to participate in the feature movie by Marcius Furtado, the 3D supervisor. He modelled digitally our worms’ mouths during six months and at the begin of this year he was invited to test as an animator
With the directors approval, Gabriel is now working in developing his skills in stop-motion , “It’s different from 3D because you have to work with the studio’s team and it’s very cool. It’s the first time I don’t have to take work home!” He also said that working in "Worms" is a unique experience and he is looking forward to watching the opening with the whole crew, laughing and speaking the lines at the same time as the characters.

Carnivorous Plants Attack!

Last Friday, July 3rd, our set producer Stella Bloss led one of the most exciting adventurous stories of Animaking. In order to save her co-worker Gabriel Costa from a sudden attack of a hungry meat-eating plant prop, this brave gaucha did not think twice in risking her own arms from the attack of those veggie monsters which got out of control and grabbed the animators’ hands, his precious working tools.
“Everything happened very fast – when I saw the screws which hold the props getting loose and plants started to shake crazily” , tells Stella. Gabriel declared that the Universe conspired in his favor and everything ended up well - “I was lucky to have a brush in my hand when the attack began, so I could grab the beast’s neck and stick it in its throat, which gave time to Stella to act” he believes his arms were mistaken for giant worms.
These plants are used for rich earthworm meals but now they are trying to adapt them to a new diet suggested by nutritionists in order to keep our movie stars safe. Witnesses stated that was not the first time they got out of control: “the last time if happened was when assistant director Fernanda Fraiz confessed to the crew she was a veggie”, told by an undisclosed source.
Fortunately, everything ended up well and the "Worms" production went on without any further delay. For more information about green attacks, follow our blog.

Party at Animaking!
Last week, our studios announced the conclusion of the first shooting phase of "Worms"! Directors Arthur Nunes and Paolo Conti celebrated the event by throwing a party to all of Animaking’s team on last Thursday, May 28th.
Arthur told us we should commemorate each minute that was accomplished for our movie. According to “the stop-motion philosophy”, where each animated frame is a result of really hard work, frame by frame, we are making a great feature film.
During the party, ready scenes of the "Worms" were shown as well a special video with some funny moments of the making off. Soon, all this material will be available on the wide screen ! Keep posted to our blog.

Mean while, in the darkness of the studios...

We would like to report an event of a kidnaping at the studios of Animaking. The set producer Paulo Maisatto claims that the disappearance of a package of cookies, the kind with chocolate filling, during the shooting of the movie on last Saturday, the 28st.
He reported that on Friday his senses were weak due to the long work that he had done on set 5. After work, Paulo returned exhausted to his home with out realizing that he had left his cookies behind. When he returned to the studio, the next day, he found a shocking photo of the kidnappers with the stolen cookies. They demand the payment of 25 boxes of chocolate with 15 liters of coffee if Paulo ever wants to see his cookies again.
Unfortunately the kidnappers could not be recognized, but we have reason to believe that members of Worms might be involved in this case. Paulo told us that he is already gathering the demanded ransom and cries out “I only hope that all of this ends ok, with out any body getting hurt.” For more stories about the making-off of this film, continue to visit our blog.

From home

In the last year of "Worms" the production rush at Animaking couldn’t be bigger. Our teams are hot and sweaty due to working hard under the summer hot sun of Floripa. In the studios the situation is not different despite of the air conditioning. So, in order to carry on the demand for 80 minutes of film a new animator has just joined the team: the newest acquisition is Thiago Calçado, an old friend of our producer, who has already worked in lots of other projects in 2D and 3D animation.
Majored in cinema by FAAP, the “mineiro” from Uberaba started with animation in 2000. Since then he has worked at a number of well-known producers in São Paulo as well as in advertising and short films for festivals. Last year he moved to Floripa to work in some projects at Animaking. The invitation to join the feature film team came this year. Thiago says he always wanted to participate in "Worms" and thinks that after working with Jr, Linda and Neco it will be difficult to return to his computer. He is sure our earthworms will make a lot of noise when they get to the “big screen”.

More Animation
This week animator Luciano Amaral arrived at Animaking in order to join the club. This carioca (born in Rio) has been working in animation for a long time and came to Florianópolis to reinforce "Worms" animating team. In the beginning of his carrier, he only built scenarios, but his start as an animator happened by chance in 2001 when he had to replace a colleague in a project. He told us he started to like the technique of stop- motion when he was invited to be in charge of a clay workshop in Anima Mundi. Since then, he has produced lots of advertising and institutional work both in stop-motion and 2D. He has also participated in the series “Hoje é dia de Maria” where he animated various puppetts 2 meters tall. The invitation for “Worms” happened about two months ago, and now with only two days working he said he is very excited in being part of a super-production as ours!

Language teacher
Despite the fact that the original audio of "Worms" is being recorded in English, the film will be launched on the Big Screen in four languages.
For this reason, our casting team was careful in selecting 'polyglot worms' both in Brazil and abroad. To make sure our actors are fluent and maintain voice consistency, there is no one better than the talented trainer of worms and other crawling creatures, Barbara Harrington.
This week she has traveled from Rio de Janeiro to spend time with the Animaking´s team. Here, Barbara is finding out all about our production, and is also busy working on the last details of the film's audio which is nearly ready. Meanwhile, our 'worms' are studying hard to charm the public all over the world! Access our blog and check out the latest news!

Mean while, deep down in the grave...
Few people know that the woods that surround Animaking keep lots of secrets. They say that the give shelter to spirits and creatures that only appear in full moon nights on Fridays the 13th. There was no better week for these creatures to visit the "Worms" project! In Halloween mood our premises were invaded by witches, vampires and other monsters that fell in love with the project and asked us to give a hand to our staff. Their collaboration was such that at the end of the day some witches insisted in giving us special apples they had brought with them. Fortunately, the majority declined such a sweet offer. Well, for more haunted and earthworms news keep visiting our blog.

A family of earthworms
The "Worms" Project, today in its second year of production, has been increasing its staff continuously. Today, there are more than 30 professionals working at Animaking’s studios in Sapiens Park - Florianópolis. The team is not only composed of Brazilians but also by people from other countries as well. They are artists, engineers, designers, architects, film makers, advertises and others – all of them united for the same purpose: making this feature a reality on big screens all over the world. That’s why they keep working hard, just stopping once in a while to take some pictures for the blog. Unfortunately, our worm stars couldn’t participate in this picture. They were very busy trying to memorize their lines for one more filming day. However, they wanted to say thanks for all the support they receive from their fans, and ask them to keep following their “steps,” I mean, their slithers, on the site!

They could also see the sets where people were working day and night. The group was really amazed by all the material already produced. The supervisor of special effects, Jacques Levesque, came from Montreal to spend a week with the producers of "Worms" to evaluate the work that is being done here. He worked with the Animaking´s supervisor of special effects, Eduardo Amodio, as a consultant for the production process of the movie. They also talked about the partnership with the Canadian studio, Wizz Films. This is the first time that Jacques worked with stop motion animation, and told us that he is very excited with this project. Animation Tests
The first animations of "Worms" have started! The director Paolo Conti has already taken photos of the first scenes with our cast. He has started doing studies of the work developed by the production teams of the movie. These tests use the puppets, sets and props created especially for the feature production, as well as the structure of the movie sets. Many of the members of the team of "Worms" participated on these first days shooting and agreed that these worms were born to be stars!

New Animators
Brazilian Rosana Van Der Meer came directly from England to the studios of Animaking where she is going to be part of the animator's team of "Worms". She spent six months in Bristol attending stop-motion animation courses at UWE (University of the West of England) and has returned to Brazil in March of this year. In February, she received an invitation to work on the feature film and in April she was confirmed. Rosana has a degree in Graphic Design from the Federal University of the State of Paraná and has already worked with the stop-motion technique in a studio and other personal projects. Now, with director Paolo Conti, they are both doing animation tests on puppets for the shooting of this movie.

_Minhocabol - the game

This sport reminds a lot of skateboarding, all its air tricks, maneuvers and slides. While skating, the worms hit balls, kick, and score goals. The important thing is that the rolly-polly keeps trying to escape from the worms, getting on their way of scoring goals; even shaped as a ball, the pet is able to see, making the game pretty fast and dynamic. The worms chase the ball, pass it and score goals. The rule: the game’s aim is to basket the rolly-polly into the top hole, like in basketball. Once in the top hole, the pet can come out through any of the bottom exits.
The sport references that we used to develop this game were skateboarding in pools (maneuvers, impulsion and moves), ice hockey (game strategy, moves) and basketball (basket, defense scheme and attack). The court looks like a skating bowl with a central basket. The equipment set is the rolly-polly, in-line skates and helmet.
As we can see at the drawing, Junior wears the national’s team t-shirt (fresh and new) and an Worm’s Jumbing helmet, while the other worm-boys wear old t-shirts and plain helmets. Although he’s the owner of the best equipment and the rolly-polly, Júnior isn’t a good player and that’s why he’s always the last one to be selected for playing by a team.
